Rev. Dr. Sonia L. King, Pastor

Rev. Sonia King is the 5th child of 7 born to the late Herbert and Odessa King of Odenton, MD. She was born in Fort Knox, Kentucky and raised in Fort Meade, Maryland. She attended Anne Arundel County Public schools and graduated from Arundel Senior High. She is a lifetime United Methodist and a daughter of Macedonia UMC in Odenton, MD.

Rev. King received a Bachelor of Science degree from Lincoln University (PA) in Therapeutic Recreation and a Master of Arts degree from George Washington University in Education and Human Development. She worked as a certified therapeutic recreation specialist for the State of Maryland for sixteen years prior to leaving to complete seminary.

In May 2004, Rev. King completed a Master of Divinity degree at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C. Rev. Sonia L. King has been under appointment in the Baltimore Washington Conference since 2005, She is an ordained Elder currently serving at Mt. Zion UMC-Magothy. Prior to coming to Mt. Zion she served two months in the Greater Southeast Cooperative Parish as Associate Pastor at First UMC Bradbury Heights. Her first appointment was Asbury UMC in Jessup. She led this congregation in becoming an Acts 2 church, and in paying its apportionments which increased 62%. She also challenged the congregation to live their faith by becoming a Haven of Hope for those desiring to begin life again. This motivated members to become involved in prison ministry, community organizing, outreach and visitation ministry.

Rev. King has a passion for Prison re-entry and has been involved with Kairos Prison Ministry for the past three years and has worked with the National Women’s Prison Project Inc. for the last five years and serving as vice president on the Board of Directors for the last three years.

Rev. King is a certified instructor for the American Red Cross, teaching HIV/AIDS courses. She has also worked as a HIV/AIDS prevention counselor for the State of Maryland, Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and traveled to Bermuda and Zimbabwe to teach HIV/AIDS education.

More importantly than these accomplishments, Rev. King is a child of God who loves ministering to God’s people, especially those that are considered the least, the last and the lost.

She is a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.; Delta Zeta Zeta Chapter of Prince George’s County and enjoys participating in sorority activities when not ministering. She also enjoys fishing, swimming, and traveling.
